Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The vinyl acetate can comprise up to 40% of the product by weight with the remainder being ethylene copolymer.
EVA could be summarised as having most of the properties of PE (not surprising as over half the makeup of EVA foam consists of ethylene) while being suited to a wider range of applications due to its superior elasticity. EVA has much more elasticity than LDPE products, offering higher rebound and resilience in response to compression. It has a high level of chemical cross-linking, giving it superior stability and tear strength.
In most other characteristics the products are very similar - though EVA is less resistant to grease and solvents than is PE, but is more resistant to UV radiation. EVA has good clarity and gloss (similar to IXPE) with little or no odour.
The closed cell structure of EVA foam makes it impermeable to water and moisture-intrusion, to fungi, bacteria, and to air. Featuring high thermal resistance, it is light in weight, flexible and compressible, and has moderate to good recovery after long-term compression.
EVA foam products are used in domestic and industrial applications for impact absorption and protection, vibration dampening, load deflection, seals and gaskets, thermal and sound insulation, and flotation. Due to its excellent elasticity, compression and rebound, EVA is a superior material for gymnasium floor areas and equipment. It is also widely used in spa covers, camping mats, yoga blocks, boat fenders and high impact, waterproof seating.
It is competitive with rubber and vinyl in many applications including sandals and shoes, gloves and helmets, for comfort and protection. Being a thermoplastic it can be moulded to shape for pads, saddles and boots, and is used (specialty types) in mouth guards and protective clothing.
